Happy Arbor Day, folks!  While we should give love and reverence to our tree-kin every day, this day always reminds us to give something back to the Earth and plant life that support our very existence on this special planet.  Today we recognize our local majesty, the coastal redwood (Sequoia sempervirons), our fog-loving, ancient friend here on the North Coast.  They are truly the masters of their environment, gathering moisture from the ground and also from the foggy air and moving that water from roots to tips as it needs to from heights of sometimes over 300 feet!  Redwoods grow...

Dandelions (Taraxacum officinale) are thought of by many as nasty weeds or lawn/garden intruders and it's truly time to re-think that image.  These heralds of Springtime not only protect, aerate, and condition soils, they bring beneficial insects to the garden and provide incredibly nutrition rich food and medicine for us.  Also, they were almost made for fun - Making dandelion crowns and wishing on the puffy seed-heads is a fond memory for many of us when we were but wee ones! We are so excited to see the Spring crop of Stinging Nettles coming up here on the North Coast.  This wild food is so delicious and rich in nutritive vitamins and minerals as well. This plant is native to western North America, Asia, some regions in North Africa and has migrated with people to other parts of the world as well. It typically grows from early spring through the summer (although here in northern Humboldt County we will often see an Autumn crop come up).  Nettle grows from 3 - 7 feet tall with serrated, deep green leaves.  The "stinging"...
