On Christmas Eve, a wish came true… the night I fell in love with you… it only took one kiss to know… It must have been the mistletoe! -Barbara Mandrell
Oh Mistletoe! It has a sweet and storied place in our Christmas traditions thanks to the Druids, the Romans and even Norse mythology make mention of this hemi-parasitic evergreen! According to many ancient cultures, Mistletoe was considered something of a cure-all, but specifically it was a symbol of vitality that was thought to increase fertility. However, it was not hung in doorways until the 18th and 19th century in Britain.
Mistletoe (European: Viscum album, North American: Phoradendron favescence) has been used as an herbal remedy for many generations, and has been effective as a nervine, antispasmodic and tonic herb and these qualities make this unique herb an excellent hypotensive (lowers blood pressure) especially combined with Hawthorn leaf and berry and Linden leaf and flower. If you decide to make medicines with Mistletoe, just remember to be cautious, sparing and use very low doses....a little goes a long way!
