It’s Flower Essence Friday and we are continuing on with the basics of flower essences. Last week, we shared the origins of the original Bach essences and this week we will talk about creating your own!
Terms to Know:
-Mother Essence: the pure flower essence with no preserving agent
-Preserving Agent: Brandy (or alcohol of your choice), Vegetable Glycerin or Apple Cider Vinegar
-Stock Bottle: The bottle in which you store your flower essence blended with the preserving agent.
-Dosage Bottle: The bottle you will take your drops from if taking internally.
*Flower essences can also be used in sprays or topical creams.
Items you will need:
-Glass or Crystal Bowl to make your essence in
-Water: Ideally fresh spring or well water. How much will depend on how much essence you would like to make. Between 2 – 8 ounces is pretty typical
-Dark Glass bottles: This is another item whose size and quantity will depend on the amount of essence you’d like to make. Let’s say you start out with 4oz of the “Mother Essence”, you would need at least a 2oz Stock Bottle and 1 1-2oz bottle for your Dosage Bottle.
-Your Beautiful Flower with which to create your essence, of course
-Optional: Garden shears or snips. Traditionally, you would snip a few flowers and allow them to float on the surface of the water in your bowl. You may also choose (if you can), to gently bend the living flower into the water thus not harming the plant ….. either way works fine.
Processing:
The American College of Healthcare Sciences has a wonderful breakdown of the creating process here:

Dosage:
-Internal: 4 drops under the tongue, 4 times per day is typical
-Spray: Depending on your need, you add 2-4 drops to water in a spritzer. You may add supportive essential oils if you choose to use as a body or room spray.
-Topical: If making your own lotion, you can add a few drops of the Mother Essence as part of your liquid component. You can also add a few drops to an already prepared lotion, cream or salve.
As we’ve said before, flower essences are a truly lovely healing modality and creating your own can give you a deeper connection and understanding with the plants. Enjoy!
